What is a big buck? And do you think you have the skills and understanding of the whitetail to put yourself in position to shoot one?  On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan is once again joined by Tony Peterson to discuss where most people go wrong when trying to hunt big bucks. Tony explains that hunting big mature bucks is more than just academics. You will hear Tony and Dan talk about "time" and how it plays a huge role in becoming a better hunt. The guys also talk about where we get our hunting strategy content from and if that is relatable to the environment you hunt n deer in.

This is another great episode that will have you asking yourself if you are truly good enough to get the job done on a big buck nd what you might think about doing if you are struggling. Enjoy!

Tony Peterson of MeatEater joins John on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast this week. John recently found out that he has an opportunity to hunt velvet whitetails in Nebraska in just a few short weeks, and he couldn't think of anyone better to get advice from than Tony. Tony is a long time outdoor writer, host of the Foundations episodes of the Wired To Hunt podcast, MeatEater content contributor, and all out deer hunting nut. Tony has a knack for getting it done on quick out of state bow hunts, just like the one John is about to embark on.

John and Tony dive right into what it takes to kill an early season whitetail. John has a lot of cards stacked against him on this quick hunt, but Tony helps him shuffle the deck to try and sort a few things out. John will have only two or three days to locate and kill a buck in a mix of corn, CRP, and timber. Tony and John talk about where bucks might be bedding, what types of food sources they might be hitting, and how John might be able to get in between the two. Tony also talks about how much he enjoys hunting Oklahoma, and the guys spend some time talking about the current state of the deer herd and how it might improve. If you have ever wanted to tag an opening day whitetail, this is the episode to help you do it!

Game Changing Food Plot Strategies: Hold them Season Long

Bowhunting

Whitetail

It's that time of year where final preparations are coming together for archery season.  Food plot planting is in full swing throughout most of the country and beginning to pick up here in the northeast.  Social media is blowing up with guys tilling and planting, promoting different seed blends and manufacturers.  But how do you really know what fits best for your situation?  This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch dives into a fall food plot discussion of tuning fall food plots with hunting strategy.

Topics of interest include 1) assessing species requirements based on browse pressure and soil capabilities, 2) maximizing the amount of tonnage for season long hunting, and 3) effectively hunting and holding the local herd with this food plot rotation.  We also touch on some potentially simple poor man no-till food plot options.  Food plots truly can change the quality of hunting on private land to the point of no return.  Anyone who has not experienced this has likely made a fatal mistake in their program that produced poor results.  Those mistakes can be avoided and are addressed in this episode!  Don't miss out!

How to Hunt Bucks in Thermal Hubs w/ Parker McDonald

Bowhunting
Whitetail
Strategy
Public Land
Big Game

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Parker McDonald of the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast about hunting deer in thermal hubs. Thermal hubs are essentially areas where the thermals cause scent to collect. Bucks love to use these areas both for bedding and during the rut, as they provide security and the ability to scent check nearby doe bedding. But they can be really tricky to hunt without getting busted. So in this show, Parker explains how to put yourself in a position to stay undetected and take advantage of these buck magnets.

If you’re not familiar with Parker, he consistently gets on bucks on highly pressured public land in the deep south. Parker is one of those guys that thinks about hunting on a different level. He’s very analytical, he’s big on hunting terrain features, and he’s developed a style that works really well for him in big woods hill country settings. If you hunt the big woods in hill country, you know there are a lot of factors working against you. Hunting pressure, wind and thermals, low deer density, and more stack the odds against you. But Parker has made specific moves to deal with each of the variables that give lots of guys trouble. He uses water access to get away from pressure, he’s meticulous when it comes to hunting wind and thermals, and he puts himself in areas that hold pockets of deer in areas with an otherwise pretty sparse population.

If you hunt big woods, hill country, or just want to better understand how to hunt thermal hubs, this episode is for you.

This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast has been a long time coming! Dalton Wortham with the Creek Adventure Podcast joins John this week to talk about fly fishing in Oklahoma. Dalton makes it a point to let people know that fly fishing is not just for the trout streams of the rocky mountains, or the overly wealthy. Dalton and his friends do a lot of their fly fishing in rivers and lakes right here in good ol Oklahoma, and target a vast multitude of species. If you can catch it on a regular rod and reel, there's a good chance you can catch it on a fly rod!

Dalton and John talk about all aspects of fly fishing, from beginner rods to the basic gear you need to get started. John asks about some flies that work well in Oklahoma as well as other places, and a few good bodys of water people should check out. And though the guys make it a point that fly fishing is for more than just trout, they do talk about some of the great trout fishing opportunities that Oklahoma offers for both fly fishermen and rod and reel folks. There is no way you can listen to this podcast and not get at least a little curious about fly fishing, and Dalton throws out some other great resources to help people get started and learn more.

Whitetail

On this episode of Huntavore, joining Nick on this in depth discussion is returning guest, Nathan Judice, the RecreationChef. Together they unpack the rib quarter of deer; the location, characteristics, and sound cooking treatments of these muscle groups.  Along the way, the guys add tips and tricks to get the most out of this very finicky quarter.  If you’ve been wanting to better utilize your deer’s midsection, make it easier to bone out for burger, or elevate these under-appreciated cuts to center stage,  tune into this episode of Huntavore.

Ribs, Brisket, Sidemeat

Location:  extends from the lower neck to the pelvis, as high as vertebrae and extending the length of the rib to the sternum.

Muscle groups/cuts: intercostal muscles: rib meat, attached between each rib, layers of muscles with pockets of hard fat.

flank muscles: attached near the groin and ending at the last rib.  Thin in profile, long muscle fibers, lean, some

diaphragm: AKA Skirt Steak, internal muscular wall, works the lungs.  Located along the inside of the ribs

brisket: front chest muscles.  Connects from the sternum to the shoulder.  Thin profile, pronounced grain

Things to watch for:Thick layers of fat: cut out any thick layers of hard fat, mostly on the outside layers of the ribs.  Does not render, very waxy.  Not to be confused with soft fat that is striated in the meat.

Blood meat: Naturally from a dispatch shot to the lungs, there will be some loss to blood and fragmented bone.

Nothing to salvage on damaged flesh.  Surface blood can be cut and scraped off an intact muscle. Membrane filled with blood can be removed.

Punctured Paunch: Burst Gut material inside the rib cage can compromise the inside cuts.  Thick membrane on the inside wall does protect outside muscles.  If gut shot and left to lay, the harvestable parts can spoil.  If during field dress the gut is nicked, quickly remove the gut, and flush with cold water for several minutes.

How to Prepare Each Cut (in our opinions)

All cuts can be added to the trim pile.  Tip: cut from the ribs, chill flat, makes finding globs of fat and removing this thick fat easier.

Rib: Nick: Two Stage Cooking, low and slow at first, finish at high heat to crisper.

Nate:Low and Slow Smoked, 2-3 hrs on smoke, 2-3 hours wrapped in foil, then finished on a hot grill or in your oven on broil. Option 2; Pressure cooker with jus to cover (30 mins to 1 hour) then finish over a hot grill with favorite BBQ sauce

Dish: Nick: Venison Rib Lolly Pop

Nate: Venison McRib Sandwich

Flank/Diaphram/Brisket: Nick: marinaded, followed by high heat, sliced thin cross grain.

Nate: Agree with the above 100%, one tip for last minute marinade is to vacuum seal or chamber seal with the marinade to aid in quicker penetration. Or inject marinade

Dish: Nick: Steak and Frites

Nate: Venison Pinwheel. Marinade, pound it out, season all sided, slather with pesto and/or roasted garlic, roll that bad boy up (paying attention to the grain so you’re slicing against the grain), truss or tooth pick it and sear on all sides hot and fast! Serve it with a nice summer salad or ratatouille

There is something special about digging in the dirt, especially, when you know the dirt under your fingernails belongs to you. While Mike surely enjoys his time in the field and has hunting strategies up his sleeve, that's not entirely what this episode is about.  Instead, he discusses his success stories and learning experiences during that time.  He also expresses the fulfillment of giving back.  Mike has shared his property with family, friends, and youth looking to tag their first deer and turkey.  It's a great reminder to not have blinders on during hunting season and to share the experiences we seek each fall.

Late July/early August is a great time to do some digital scouting and hang some stands. Understanding thermals and their impact on wind currents can help you take your scouting and stand sight selection to the next level. Thermals can make or break a hunt. Not only do they influence how deer move across the landscape, but hunting with thermals in mind can be the difference between you watching as a white tails bound off through the timber or you getting a chip shot at your target. But thermals can be tough to understand and predict.

In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Eric Ives of Red Bearded Predators for a little thermals 101. Eric hunts the hill country of southwestern WI, so he is no stranger to thermals, how they impact your hunting setups, and how deer use them to their advantage. On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Aaron Warbritton of the Hunting Public about how he uses trail cameras throughout the hunting season and how he documents all of his finding on hunting apps. Arron talks about where he places his trail cameras on exit trails in bedding areas and in locations that will catch nocturnal deer movement as well as any pressure from other hunters. This gives him an idea of what deer are in the area and what kind of access strategy he needs to use to avoid other public land hunters. As this information starts to come in, he waits for the right conditions to make a move on a shooter buck.

The second half of the conversation revolves around how he documents everything he observes while in the woods scouting and hunting. Aaron documents everything from old sign from previous years, to fresh rubs and scrapes, food sources, parking areas, and taking detailed notes so he has as much information to pull from when he is putting together a hunting strategy on a shooter buck. Tons of great information on this episode. Listen close, you might just learn something.

In this podcast Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Ryan Audet (Client) discuss the journey of owning and transforming a hunting property. Ryan is a recent client located in Vermont that has gone through the consulting and implementation process with Jon, and his journey and know-how has allowed him to transform multiple properties he manages. Jon and Ryan discuss the importance of having a vision and being empowered to make changes.

Jon discusses the importance of long- or short-term objectives and setting goals that work toward an overall vision. Ryan discusses his ideas and philosophy and why he decided to hire a consultant. Jon explains why consulting is important to setting the stage to lay out a proper plan that will support goals. Ryan explains how he benefited from the onsite consulting and implementation work, and how he has taken the strategies and established his “Deer Lense” to make his small and large property turn into better future hunting property.

Jon discusses the empowerment mindset and how that will lead you down the road to push yourself to make changes to your property. Jon and Ryan discuss the tools required, Ryan’s mindset and how hard work and applying it to the property has already helped. Ryan explains what changes he has seen as a result of making changes to his properties.

Jon explains his Deer Lense and how to transform and level up food plots, timber and fields.  Jon and Ryan explain specific strategies for both small and large hunting properties. Ryan and Jon discuss the importance of social hubs on the landscape. Jon explains how to create better bedding areas. Jon demystifies the ideas around inside versus outside hunting properties. Jon explains doe and buck bedding and why many hunters are unsure if there truly is a difference.  Jon explains how YouTube related information can be more of a problem in establishing true principles to property management and design.

We have a very exciting and much requested topic this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast. Returning guests Jonny Griffin and Josh Garroutte both join the show for a public land whitetail roundtable. John asks the questions, and Jonny and Josh answer from their unique and different perspectives. Jonny is more of the traditional treestand hunter, while Josh has been making a name for himself in the open country ground hunting game. So no matter how you choose to chase whitetails, we have an answer for you on this episode.

Topics covered include where to start hunting, how to use trail camera data, buck bedding and how it plays into your strategy, wind, and terrain just to name a few. Along the way all three gentlemen drop plenty of tips and tricks from using online maps to cheaper feed for your feeders. To end the discussion, Jonny and Josh both help John with some potential hunting strategies for his upcoming early season Nebraska velvet hunt. The boys truly cover it all in this episode!

The guy discuss everything from how does choose buck to mate with, does a bucks aggression level impact his ability to breed if he is a smaller antlered and smaller bodied buck, and other general deer behavior questions.

The second half of the episode is dedicated predicting deer movement and behavior. Dan talks with Bronson about hunting apps that claim to predict deer movement and whether or not that data can be trusted. This is a very insightful episode the will leave you thinking about deer behavior and comparing it to experiences you have had while hunting. Enjoy!

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan interviews the other half of Drury Outdoors, Terry Drury, about his life as an outdoorsman. Terry talks about growing up in small town Missouri small game hunting with a group of his friends. This eventually set the foundation for more hunting opportunities in the world of turkey and whitetails. Terry shares memories of his father and mother and even when he was a young man and how life today is much different than the "old days". The guys talk about Terry's family, his grandchildren, and the impact they have had on his life.

Terry also shares some fun stories from the early days of Drury Outdoors about how his brother Mark and himself used to get in heated arguments when things didn't go right while hunting. He explains his evolution as a hunter and how is very calculated and patient when making deer hunting strategy decisions.

I'll be honest, recording this episode was a blast and I would have to rank interview in the top 20 for sure. Enjoy!

When this episode drops, there are only 71 days remaining before Pennsylvania's statewide archery season opens.  Season preparation is in full swing for many diehards and the anticipation is creeping up.  That also means the time of year is approaching when sportsmen and women are spending less time at home with family.  How do you handle the balance between your outdoor passion and family time?

On this week's episode we chat with Josh Raley, a fellow Sportsmen's Empire contributor for the Wisconsin Sportsman and How to Hunt Deer Podcasts.  Josh faces the same dilemma's as anyone. He is a husband, a father, and a faithful follower of the Lord, but also crazy about chasing whitetail deer and turkeys whenever humanly possible.  Josh shares with us some of his journey which led him to where he is now and how those learning experiences have molded him into the hunter, father, husband, and believer that he is today.  There is a lot left to be said from Josh, as he is no stranger to chasing whitetails across the country and we look forward to having him back for more deer hunting conversations!

Gear

Bowhunters across the country have dusted off the bows to get dialed in for the upcoming archery season. Summer archery practice is a vital part of fall hunting success. If you’re like many bowhunters, there are parts of your gear you’re considering swapping out for one reason or another. One piece of gear Josh recently swapped out is his sight. The old peep and pin setup provided a cluttered sight picture, didn’t perform well in low light, and required a somewhat unnatural feel when aiming. Enter the Adjustable Red Dot sight.

The Adjustable Red Dot sight system provides faster target acquisition, easily adjusts for yardage, and eliminates the need for a peep altogether. For Josh, it’s just made shooting fun again! You have to see the difference to fully understand it. And once you shoot one, you’ll never want to go back. Check them out at www.adjustablereddot.com.

On this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles, Dan talks with Jerry Rude about loosing a piece of hunting property forcing him to ask permission on new ground. He was happy with what he found. Jerry explains that just a couple months before the season started he lost a property that he had been hunting for several years. This led him to looking for property closer to home. What started as an e-scouting mission, led him to knock on a door of of a property that had some potential. He was surprised when the land owner told him "yes". Well, it was all too good to be true, that particular property was over run with pressure most months of the year.

This forced him to go back to the drawing board and once again he started digital scouting. He located a property that looked pretty good. After a couple weeks of trying to get a hold of the land owner, he finally got him on the phone and permission was granted. At first, the property didn't produce much action and Jerry was worried that he would have to start over. But, after a couple of trail camera card pulls and some sightings from the stand Jerry realized that he landed in the middle of a honey-hole.

Kenny ties in the best tree species to deer habitat and what plants you may want to consider keeping or putting on your landscape.  Certain trees are more beneficial from a food and economic value standpoint and can add value to the overall property. Kenny explains insect issues as it pertains to certain tree species and how biodiversity can help maintain a healthy forest setting. Jon provides examples from the field and the problems he is seeing with insect damage, fragmentation and non-native plants. Jon and Kenny talk about buying a property for hunting and key considerations they both believe make the difference.

Jon and Kenny discuss climate shifting and the related impact to tree species. Jon discusses tree species that are dying and the impact on client properties. They talk about a shared pastime of disc golf, attempting bottom round burnt ends, and making a seasonal berry sauce that will elevate any steak dinner. Be ready to up your summer game with this episode of Huntavore.

Rikki Folger is an accomplished chef who has worked in Napa, California and now in Colorado. While also being a Somalia, someone who is trained in wine tasting, she also creates whole dishes in the kitchen. Nick, however, skips over all that and dives into a shared recreational game between them, disc golf. Lots of parallels between disc and ball golf, but one area that disc has focused on, is playing among the established habitat. For Nick, his foraging game has greatly improved, because of bad throws into the woods. Rikki turns her attention to improving Nick’s attempt on venison burnt ends. Immediate issue was the marbling and fat contact of the bottom round. The smoking and keeping the moisture in was achieved, but the crust and char was not up to par. Rikki offered to increase the surface area when broiling. Now one of the best parts of summer are the seasonal fruits that ripe for the picking. Rikki takes an already beautiful piece of grilled venison steak and adds a berry sauce. She chose blueberry as a sweet and tart sauce that would elevate a simple steak into fine dining.

This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we pick back up where we left off in last week's conversation with Cory Gulvas. Mature mountain bucks in the northeast can be an extremely difficult quarry to encounter in the first place. But connecting on one with a stick bow inside 20 yards is a whole new level of difficulty!

Regardless of the type of vertical bow in hand, archery is a mental game. It's easy to develop bad habits that require practice schemes to break them. Cory shares with us that he has experienced target panic to such a degree, that during one particular season he hoped he would not see a shooter within range due to his lack of confidence behind the bow. The recording starts talking about hunting fresh sign versus hunting spots that you found in post-season without fresh sign. But then they shift to talking about crop rotations and early season ag field setups and bedding, how many deer will bed corn but you can still glass or set up on them while they're in that pattern before the harvest. They also discuss hill country, including how to take advantage of wind switches, learning to identify key transition areas in river-bottoms to set up on, primary versus secondary food and browse in staging areas, what to do differently in areas with a high tonnage per acre of browse, using wind and thermals, and even set up specifics like height in the tree on early season hunts among other things.
